Getting to know the Philosophy of Education Society

As a Clinical Professor in the Graduate School of Education of the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University, Harvey Shapiro, Ph.D., teaches courses on the sociopolitical contexts of education and the relationships among faith, ethics, and educational leadership.

Harvey Shapiro is also an active member in a number of esteemed and noteworthy organizations such as the Philosophy of Education Society.

The Philosophy of Education Society is an international forum wherein scholars, philosophers, and educators all converge to exchange ideas on education. Their discussions touch on policies and research, as well the advancement of the quality of teaching the philosophy of education.

It was R. Bruce Raup of Teachers College, Columbia University who formed the group in November 1940. He sent a proposal letter to fellow educators and philosophers all over the United States to form a national group of those directly devoted to the teaching or other pursuits of the philosophy of education.

According to Harvey Shapiro, planning took about a year before the earliest Philosophy of Education Society members had their first meet-up in Philadelphia in a session called “A Meeting of Teachers of Philosophy of Education.” It was also then that the members agreed to name their group the Philosophy of Education Society. The society had 34 official members then.

Today, 80 years later, the Philosophy of Education Society prides itself of having hundreds of members that include faculty, graduate students, and other interested parties from all over the world.

Harvey Shapiro, PhD, is a clinical professor at the Graduate School of Education of the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University. His courses focus on sociopolitical contexts of education, and on the relationships among faith, ethics, and educational leadership.
